Europe in a Changing World Order

What is Holding Us Together? A panel, a discussion with a diverse crowd of guests

Annual Europe Day. For this occasion, we bring together alumni and alumnae of the Youth Debating programme from across Europe and into conversation with the public, to discuss challenges and opportunities for democratic life in contemporary Europe.

The Hertie Foundation, one of the largest philanthropic organizations in Germany, and the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome sincerely invite you to an expert panel discussion:

Europe in a Changing World Order: What is Holding Us Together?
28 May 2026 | Doors open: 5:15 pm | Panel begins: 6:00 pm
German Academy Villa Massimo | Largo di Villa Massimo, 1, 00161 Roma

Our distinguished panel brings together leading voices in European foreign policy and international affairs:

  • Evie Aspinall – Director, British Foreign Policy Group, London
  • Dr. Tobias Cremer – Member of the European Parliament; Committees on Foreign Affairs, Security and Defense
  • Dr. Nathalie Tocci – Director, Istituto Affari Internazionali, Rome

Europe is facing a changing world order marked by geopolitical rivalry and internal polarization. The US administration under Donald Trump is changing its leadership style, questioning core principles such as state sovereignty and free trade. In this environment, the European Union is facing the challenge of remaining externally capable of acting while preserving cohesion and democratic legitimacy within it.

This event aims to explore what might bind Europe together in times of uncertainty. Are we still bound by culture, common history and values or is everyone pursuing egocentric interests? We will reflect on how democratic debate and political leadership can contribute to sustaining Europe’s capacity to act and what role Europe should play in an increasingly multipolar world where its most important alliance can no longer be taken for granted.

Germany and Italy, among others, have taken an active role within these debates.

The event will be held in English.
